This is a copy of the notice that was mailed to all City of Wayne Utility Customers:

PUBLIC NOTICE

CITY OF WAYNE

NOTICE OF DRINKING WATER EXCEEDING THE SELENIUM MAXIMUM CONTAMINANT LEVEL

In accordance with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Regulations Governing Public Water Supply Systems, the consumers of the City of Wayne public water system are hereby notified that the system is in violation of the established drinking water standard of 50 μg/l (micrograms per liter) for selenium.

The sample result for selenium was 79 μg/l (micrograms per liter) and the confirmation sample result for selenium was 122 μg/l (micrograms per liter).

What Should I Do?

You are not required to obtain an alternate source of drinking water. Households with children under 12 years of age, pregnant women, and individuals with kidney disease may want to use bottled water for drinking. People with health concerns should consult with their physician.

What Does This Mean?

Prolonged exposure to drinking water containing selenium in excess of the standard may pose an increased risk of hair or fingernail loss, numbness in fingers or toes, and circulatory problems.

What Happened? What Is Being Done?

Selenium is a naturally occurring substance. It is a component of volcanic ash and some types of rocks carried to Nebraska by the glaciers. None of the selenium found in drinking water in Nebraska comes from human activities.

Corrective Action: G-062209, Well 702 No. 7 will be put on "emergency status" effective immediately.

City of Wayne anticipates returning to compliance by taking the well out of service and placing it into emergency status.
