On August 17, 2010 the City of Wayne broke ground on a new wastewater treatment facilty to replace the existing facility on site. The new facilty is required in order to comply with new federal and state regulations pertaining to the discharging of waste water back into the local watershed.
The City of Wayne, in conjunction with its parters, JEO Consulting Group, Inc. (engineers) and Eriksen Constuction (general contractor) broke ground on a new 0.750 MGD (millions of gallons per day) wastewater treatment facility. The facility will utilize the Aquarius Treatment System. The Aquarius Treatment System is an innovative technology that will strive to produce little to no sludge for the community. Today marks an important milestone in the overall process of study, design, construction, and ultimately the operation of this facility. This project began over two years ago beginning as a study and evaluation of the existing wastewater treatment facility. The Aquarius Treatment System is a proven waste water treatment system in Europe, and the Wayne project will be the first of its kind in the United States.
The City Council approved the study conducted by JEO and authorized JEO to prepare plans and specifications for a new wastewater treatment facility. Today, our ceremonial shovelers will move the project into the construction phase. Construction of the facility will be completed by Eriksen Construction and is anticipated to take approximately one year to reach operation and a year and a half to full completion. This project will provide the City of Wayne with a facility that will meet the water quality standards required by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System as well as provide the capability for growth and economic development within the City.
Funding for this project is being provided by the City of Wayne, United States Environmental Protection Agency through a $530,000 Congressional Demonstration Funds for innovative technology, and by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality through the Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund loan and loan forgiveness program.
