The City of Wayne contains approximately 34 miles of paved streets that are maintained by the Public Works Department. In 1920 and 1921 the first streets were paved in Wayne. These streets were constructed of brick laid on top of a concrete base. The brick streets still exist today in the older parts of town and have served the community well over the years. After the initial paving, streets were constructed solely of concrete. Most of the older residential streets in Wayne are narrow by today's standards. New streets are now required to be 32 feet wide and seven inches thick allowing for larger vehicles to safely travel within the community.
It is imperative that the streets remain safe and structurally sound to provide for quality transportation.
